Greenwood Paper Special Issue

Romania's Engagement in Subregional Co-operation and the National Strategy for NATO Accession

Adina Stefan
61 pages, ISBN 90-76301-11-5 (12 1999)

Adina Stefan stresses that Romania's involvement in local or subregional security co-operation is complementary to the quest for integration in European and Euro-Atlantic structures rather than an alternative to this. She elucidates this complementarity by providing a review of risks and threats to Romania's security; giving an account of the country's involvement in subregional and military co-operation structures; and by analysing NATO interoperability. Moreover, the author assesses the financial costs implied by these activities. Involvement in subregional co-operation can produce direct benefits, such as subregional military co-operation, and indirect benefits, such as economic progress, which is among NATO requirements. Stefan's overview of the regional dimension of a south-east European country's recent experience has obvious comparative possibilities.
